The beautiful new interior at the North Valleys Lirary
Our newly-refreshed library is once again open to the public. Stop by to say hello and enjoy the new North Valleys Library!

The North Valleys Library serves the many valley communities located on the east side of Peavine Mountain.

Currently located in the North Hills Shopping Center at US 395 North and Golden Valley Road, this branch has served its community for over 40 years. The Stead Library and three bookmobiles began operating from a site in Stead in 1973. The collection and original staff moved to our current location in June 1988 to be in a more central location to all of the valley communities we serve.

At this location, the branch has expanded two times, has increased business almost ten times over what it was at the original location. A remodel completed in December 2016 has made significant improvements to improve services to our community until a new library can be built.

We currently have 9,000 square feet of space and approximately 30,000 items in print and multi-media format, as well as a growing collection of materials in Spanish.

North Valleys Library staff work closely with the schools in our service area.  For our patrons, we offer popular titles and assist with topics of interest to the public, as well as programs of special interest including the monthly book discussion group.

The fact that the library is located in a central shopping facility for the North Valleys, makes this library easy to access and provides "one stop" for many of our citizens.

Renovations FAQ

We remodeled the current building, does that mean we won’t get a new library facility?

No.  The North Valleys Library building is still under consideration by Washoe County to be included on the current Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).  Recent and fast growth in North Valleys has been noticed by planners at the County and the Library System.

By supporting the renovation of our current building and the new programs and services that will result from it, we are supporting and demonstrating the essential role that the North Valleys Library plays for our community.  By continuing to stay viable and modern, the library will strengthen its position for a new building.  Our improvement project today is a step towards the North Valleys Library building of tomorrow!

Why was the library closed for the renovation?

In order to complete the project quickly and safely, the North Valleys Library needed to temporarily suspend service.  All materials, fixtures, and furnishings had to be removed from the building to make necessary repairs.

Will there be fewer books now that you've reopened?

The whole library layout is much different from what it was before the project began.  We heard what our users’ needs are after talking with many of you prior to the remodel.  While we couldn't accommodate all of the wishes with this project, we did our best to get close!

The library books have been moved into more accessible layouts. Based on usage some collections are now smaller in order to have room to grow those collections in higher demand. Some of the changes you will see on your next visit include:

  • Increased space has been increased for family and early literacy services
  • Room will be allocated for individual and collaborative work on your own devices
  • Designated quiet space will be created
  • Space will be created to offer passive and formal Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematic (STEAM) learning

Who did this work? Can’t it have been completed at a lower cost?

The bulk of the work on this project was completed by your North Valleys Library Team.  The staff and our volunteers provided as much of the labor as possible in order to save money.  At some points we worked with vendors and contractors, and throughout the project we worked closely with other Washoe County departments and staff to make this project a success at the lowest cost possible.

Why couldn't the county just pay for this? Why did you need to raise additional funds?

We are very thankful for the generous support from Washoe County and the Washoe County Library System.  We are matching their contribution to the project with money raised locally in the North Valleys Library via our regular used book sales.  We are raising money to help replenish the loss of those gift funds – the North Valleys Gift Fund will be exhausted by this project. The Gift Funds are important as they allow us to make minor repairs when the need arises (such as replacing our beloved fish tank this spring when it began leaking), and to supplement supplies and equipment for educational and cultural programs and services.

Can I help?

Any donation will make a great impact on the success of this project and the services delivered after its completion. You may contribute at any Washoe County Library location, or you may send a check payable to Washoe County Library System to P.O. Box 2151, Reno, NV 89505.
