Judge sentences habitual criminal in gun crime

Jesse Albert Moreno sentenced to 20 years.

Reno, Nevada. April 17, 2015. Second Judicial District Court Judge Scott Freeman sentenced Jesse Albert Moreno, DOB 5/1/67, of Sparks, to 20 years in prison for possessing a firearm as a felon and 20 years in prison due to the firearm being stolen. The sentences will run concurrently and Moreno will be eligible for parole after serving a minimum of eight years.  Judge Freeman adjudicated Moreno a Habitual Criminal, which increases prison terms for repeat felons. Moreno had been previously convicted of eight felonies. His most recent prison term expired in May of 2012. 

The events which lead to Moreno’s arrest occurred on June 27, 2014, in Sparks.  Moreno was stopped for a traffic violation. After providing a fake name, he ultimately told officers he had a gun under the driver’s seat.  The gun was reported stolen by the owner the day before Moreno’s arrest.  Moreno was indicted by the Washoe County Grand Jury in July, 2014, and entered guilty pleas to the charges.

This case is an example of the severe consequences available to deter repeat offenders and felons who possess illegal firearms.
