Local air quality affects how we live and breathe

April 29, 2016. Reno, Nevada. National Air Quality Awareness Week, May 2 - May 6, is a good time for area residents to reflect upon the importance of one of the natural resources we all depend upon and share: clean air. Local air quality affects how we live and breathe. It is vital to good health and to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Like the weather, it can change from day to day or even hour to hour. The Air Quality Management Division (AQMD) of the Washoe County Health District urges everyone, especially this week, to remember that our air is a fragile resource that we all impact in some way with our individual daily activities.

“AQMD is responsible for implementing the Clean Air Act to ensure everyone in Washoe County, both citizens and visitors, have clean and healthy air to breathe,” stated AQMD Director Charlene Albee.  “Not only do we strictly regulate the emissions from businesses, but we also have programs to engage residents in the control of emissions.  Our award winning program, Keep it Clean, has four major community action components: Know the Code, a wood burning advisory using the Green-Yellow-Red Burn Code; Rack Em Up, a clean alternative transportation program; nOzone, a smog prevention program; and Be Smoke Smart, a wildfire smoke awareness program.  AQMD encourages everyone to do their part to Keep it Clean.”

Themes for Air Quality Awareness Week will include each Keep It Clean program and highlight our local partners:

  • Monday:  Rack Em Up
  • Tuesday:  nOzone
  • Wednesday:  Be Smoke Smart
  • Thursday:  Know the Code
  • Friday:  Our Local Partners

Check back on OurCleanAir.com or our Facebook and Twitter pages every day during Air Quality Awareness Week for more information about these programs and ways you can help keep our air clean and healthy.
