Chair Kitty Jung cancels the special meeting of the County Commission

Commission to appoint to three vacant legislative seats on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016.

Reno, Nevada. Sept. 20, 2016. Washoe County Commission Chair Kitty Jung cancelled a special meeting scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016. The agenda items to fill three, vacant state legislative seats in Washoe County for Nevada State Senate Districts 13 and 15, as well as Nevada State Assembly District 25 will be placed on the agenda for the regularly scheduled Board meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016, at 10 a.m.

“In an abundance of caution and an effort to provide full transparency, we reached out to the District Attorney’s Office and the Attorney General’s office to reevaluate our process and have decided to cancel Thursday’s special meeting to allow the names of the nominees to be placed on the agenda for the Tuesday, Sept. 27 meeting,” Washoe County Commission Chair Kitty Jung said.

At Tuesday’s Board of County Commissioners meeting, Chair Jung announced the process the Board will use to nominate and appoint three, vacant, state legislative seats.  She asked that each commissioner submit a nomination for each vacant seat by Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016 at 5 p.m. That deadline has not changed.

Individuals interested in being considered for nomination can contact the Washoe County Commissioners online or contact the Manager’s Office by calling 775-328-2000.

For more information regarding the requirements to qualify to be appointed for one of these seats, refer to NRS 218A, Section 260.

Washoe County received notice from Governor Brian Sandoval Friday, Sept. 16, to declare the seats vacant, allowing for the County Commission to appoint to the vacant legislative seats.

“There is no indication as to if or when the Governor might call a special legislative session, but we will do our part to fulfill our legal obligation to fill these seats as requested by Governor Sandoval,” Commission Chair Kitty Jung said.

The deadline to post Tuesday’s agenda is Thursday, Sept. 22, 2016 at 9 a.m.
