Make Science Fun with the Great American Eclipse.

UPDATE 8/15: All Washoe County Libraries are out of eclipse glasses.

On Monday, August 21, 2017, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. Although Nevada is not one of the states that will experience a total eclipse, viewers in our area will be treated to a significant partial eclipse. To help celebrate this historic event, Washoe County Library System is offering free solar eclipse glasses, one per person (present), who comes into the library and request a pair, while supplies last.

Viewing the eclipse with your family is a great way to bring STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) activities into your home. Additionally, Washoe County Library System has assembled a variety of free STEAM-related programs that will motivate kids, teens, and adults with educational and fun hands-on learning activities, including Studio775 Makerspaces.

The Library’s STEAM programs and maker services provide interactive and interesting ways to get learners excited about science, from the youngest learners to post-graduates and community members alike. According to Library Director Jeff Scott, “libraries, in addition to programs and events, have increased their collections with items in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and math that are ready for checkout.”

Get ready for the eclipse with books about the sun for all ages. Find more information about the Great American Eclipse at www.space.com/33797-total-solar-eclipse-2017-guide.html
