Northwest Reno Library Hosts African American History Events: October 2 and October 9

Learn More About African American History at These Informative Programs

The Northwest Reno Library, a branch of the Washoe County Library System, is hosting two events this month in observance of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in North America.  

Wednesday, October 2, 2019 from 5-7 p.m.
African American Genealogy:
 African American family historians face unique challenges when researching their ancestry. Please join Suzanne Malek, TMCC Librarian/Genealogist who will be discussing what those challenges are and how to overcome them to build your family tree and preserve your proud heritage.

Wednesday, October 9, 2019 from  5-6:30 p.m.
400 years of African Americans in America: 
Africans were brought to Point Comfort, Virginia in 1619. Dr. Greta de Jong, professor of African American History at UNR, will discuss the evolving status of African Americans from 1619 to 2019. There will be a 40 minute talk followed by a discussion and questions.
