Commissioner's gave direction on revitalizing Citizen Advisory Boards, accept Registrar of Voters’ Petition to Establish Unincorporated Town of “Warm Springs Valley,” approve deputy support in Incline Village

Reno, Nev. August 18, 2020. The following are highlights from today’s Washoe County Board of County Commissioners meeting:

 1. Commissioners gave direction on enhancing the current Citizen Advisory Board (CAB) program.  Over the past several years the Board has requested further discussion relating to the current CAB program for review.  Staff included feedback gathered from each Commissioner over the past few months, and vetted that information into a presentation that detailed themes about sharing information, participation in CAB meetings, and the role of Washoe County and engaging citizens in each of the five Commissioner Districts.  The goal is to create an opportunity to discuss with and engage residents in community issues without jurisdictional limitations.

Chair Bob Lucey said, “We have consistently had challenges with our CAB program, we tried the one size fits all which hasn’t been as effective as we intended.  There is no way we can have one model that fits every community need. You have to have a hybrid model and a blended discussion to communicate back and forth.”

The Board voted in favor of bringing management of CAB program to the Office of the County Manager, one time a month structured CAB meetings for all districts and expand options for CAB programs. Staff will return to the Board in the coming months with options to create a more comprehensive program, including staffing and budgetary needs to support the new program.

2. Commissioner’s approve Registrar of Voters’ resolution for Petitions to Establish the Unincorporated Town of “Warm Springs Valley” on General election ballot.   After hearing the second and most recent Petition, the Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution placing the language of both the first Petition, submitted to the Board on July 21, 2020, and a second Petition to establish the Unincorporated Town of “Warm Springs Valley per NRS 269.550.2;  on the upcoming General election ballot.

Vice-Chair Marsha Berkbigler said, “I don't know why we would reject this. If the citizens of Warm Springs Valley want this, let them have it.”
