WCDA Secures Justice in 2008 Child Sexual Assault Case

Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks has announced that Alvin Go-Tan, age 51, from the Philippines has been sentenced to life in prison after having been convicted in a May District Court Jury Trial on one count of Sexual Assault of a Child.  Based on the sentence imposed by District Court Judge Egan Walker, Go-Tan must serve a minimum of 35 years in prison before parole eligibility begins.

The case against Go-Tan began in May 2008 when he was arrested by the Reno Police Department for having sexually assaulted a 13-year-old female victim.  Following his arrest, Go-Tan, who is a United States Citizen, was released on bail and fled to his family home in the Philippines prior to his preliminary hearing.  He was subsequently indicted by the Washoe County Grand Jury in October 2008 and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest. This office worked closely with the United States Marshals Service’s Nevada Fugitive Task Force, who located Go-Tan in 2019 and worked with the Philippine Government to extradite him back to the United States in September 2020.

At sentencing, Chief Deputy District Attorney Kelly Kossow argued that the sentencing date was a long wait for the victim to finally get justice.  The victim in the case testified about the damaging impact Go-Tan’s crimes had on her life.
